Principles of Collection Management and Introduction to Paper Conservation were two short courses I completed at University of the Arts London, Camberwell in July and August.

Principles of Collection Management was taught by curator Jacqueline Winston-Silk. Teaching methods of collection management, how to navigate the Spectrum database and appropriate ways to handle and package objects. We went through the variations of museum collections and all the materials required among other things such as UK documentation standards (acquisition, inventory, cataloguing, location control etc.), Collections care (environment, storage, condition reporting, pest control and common types of deterioration etc) and loan procedures, digitisation and disposal.

The Introduction into Paper Conservation course was taught by MA Conservation tutor Craig Horsfall. We were shown how to identify and treat the key factors contributing to the deterioration of paper-based cultural artefacts such as prints, drawings and watercolours. In the afternoon we had to work on our own damaged book pages using the processes that we had learnt throughout the day.
